Da Vinci’s drawings were extraordinary ‘doodles’, ideas, life studies and studies for paintings. I much prefer his drawings to the paintings. Blaspheme! Foremost, aesthetically. But more importantly, to appreciate his technical and creative process. I have studied and drawn from them since I was 9.

This one, young woman, is particularly striking. The contrast of the fully rendered face in a barely sketched piece provides insight into his technical process. Sculptural.
I spent a lot of time copying his anatomical drawings. Fortunately my mother was not disturbed. The drawings are stylized, and therefore more interesting than gruesome. And appealing.
