יום השואה Yom Ha’Shoa

“Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day”

Yom HaZikaron laShoah ve-laG’vurah
יום הזיכרון לשואה ולגבורה;

Today the world  remembers an atrocity we would not like to remember, so painful and horrid beyond imagination.   The Shoa: The Holocaust.  We also remember the perpetrators and those who worked against them.  We have seen the photos,  films, heard the survivors and seen their tattoos – so we cannot ever forget.

It was a truth – a reality we must remember, in graphic detail, in order to remain vigilant in the present and future to not sit idle in the face of human degradation and suffering.

“Lord, remember not only the men of good will, but also those of ill will. But do not remember all the suffering they have inflicted upon us. Remember rather the fruits we have brought, thanks to this suffering: our comradeship, our loyalty, our humility, the courage, the generosity, the greatness of heart that has grown out of this. And when they come to judgment, let all the fruits we have bourne be their forgiveness.”
– a Yom Ha’Shoah prayer

Remembering the past: Leslie Meisels recounts his experiences.  The present and future:  Elie Wiesel laments the present and speaks about the global context.

Leslie Meisels

Hatred is something we must fight against.
Leslie Meisels, survivor of Aschwitz, Theresienstadt, and Bergen Belsen

From international conference reuniting Holocaust Survivors with their American Soldier Liberators at Hudson Falls High School in upstate NY, Sept., 2009:

 Elie Wiesel

I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.
– Elie Wiesel, survivor of Auschwitz, Buna, and Buchenwald

Elie Wiesel: “The world is not learning anything”.
